Chronic stress can be a real problem. Although stress is part of our survival instincts, it is not something that you want to prolong in your life. While you can never really be rid of the stresses of life, it is very important that you get to know what really goes on when you are stressed. Because if this gets out of hand, it can lead to a lot of problems in your life.
Stress, in small doses, is a good thing. It helps your body prepare to face a threat. You either go into a fight or flight mode. It allows you to survive the usual obstacles that happen in your life. But when it goes beyond the normal dose, that is when it becomes a threat in itself.
What is Chronic Stress
Chronic stress involves a high-level of stress that never really goes away. It can be a response to a grave threat or it can be a response to a smaller issue. It is wrong to assume that this can only be caused by a traumatic event. While there is truth to that, it is not the only way for you to get this type of stress. Sometimes, stress comes in small doses but in a consistent manner. An illness or being in a wrong relationship or situation can place you under constant stress. You need to do something about this.
When you are in a prolonged state of stress, your body will read that as a threat in itself. It will then try to keep up by releasing the same hormones that will cause you to stress some more. Being in a high-state of alertness is not a good thing because our bodies are not meant for that. Instead of the stress giving you what you need to fight or flee, it will start working against you.
What you need to understand is that the consequences of this type of stress can be very serious. It can actually lead to critical ailments. For one, it can lead to heart problems. Not only that, it can also make you feel depressed or high levels of anxiety.
With these issues alone, you will already be forced to find ways to cope. That can lead to eating disorders, behavioural changes, and similar reactions. All in all, it will not be a pretty sight.
